Ilkeston sits 10 miles west of Nottingham city, just over the Derbyshire border in DE7. The town has one of the older housing profiles in our coverage area — a substantial proportion of the central streets are Victorian and Edwardian terraces from the late 1800s and early 1900s, originally built for the local mining and lace industries.
That housing stock drives the work we do in DE7. Pre-1965 rubber-cored cabling, lead-sheathed runs from the 1920s and 1930s on the older Cotmanhay terraces, and undersized earthing systems that pre-date modern bonding requirements. Full rewires, partial rewires on damaged circuits, and earthing system upgrades are routine.
Newer estate housing in Kirk Hallam and on the periphery of Cotmanhay is closer to our standard 1970s–2000s profile — typically fuseboard upgrades and EICRs rather than full rewires. We are on Ilkeston addresses 1–2 days a week, more during peak rewire season (March–October).

See eicr / electrical safety certificate detailsPeriod property rewires are a different job to estate housing rewires. Lath-and-plaster walls don't take chasing. Floorboards are often hard-pinned. Joist runs go in unexpected directions. We work cables through floor voids and lofts where we can, chase walls only where unavoidable, and leave the property ready for the decorator — not picking out cable runs from rubble.
Earthing upgrades on older Ilkeston terraces are a near-universal part of the rewire scope. We bring main bonding to gas and water up to current standard as part of any full rewire, and we issue the EIC with the bonding clearly recorded.
Rubber-cored cabling on pre-1965 Ilkeston terraces is the dominant finding on first inspection. The insulation has gone brittle, individual circuits show low insulation resistance, and the system is no longer fixable by remedial work. The honest answer is a full rewire — and the homeowner usually already suspects it before we visit.
Lead-sheathed cabling, sometimes running between meter and consumer unit on properties that haven't been touched since the 1930s, is a less common but more serious finding. We replace these as a priority and certify the new run separately if the rest of the installation can wait.
Original earth bonding (or absence of it) on older Cotmanhay terraces — main earth electrode missing, gas and water bonding often not present — is fixed during fuseboard upgrades or during the main bonding work that accompanies a rewire.
